| Doesn't it make you wonder when occasionally we hear "oil prices are rising out of fear of...." or "corn prices are rising out of fear of a shortage caused by ethanol". Why do we allow a situation where prices are determined by emotion? At this point most anti-anything people start into the conspiracy theory often including black helicopters, the illuminati and such. I won't go there because what I glean from history is that the only thing that really resembles a conspiracy is loose, often unspoken, agreements of greed and power. Our country and economy were founded on the free market system based on supply and demand. This system works well as long as nobody can manipulate supply. Now a bit of history. A long time ago when rum was the king of beverages, growing sugar cane (the main raw ingredient to rum) was a pretty good business. A few growers realized that if they held off selling their crop until the market was not glutted with it just at harvest, they could get a better price. The rum makers didn't like this because they were used to strong arming lower prices trying to only buy when there was a surplus, but that was now not providing enough cane. So they cooked up a scheme to buy part or all of a crop before harvest for a discounted rate, calling it futures. The enough of cane raisers thought it was a good idea, because their whole income was not once a year, to make it work. Then the rum makers started trading futures and the market price started following futures making later sold futures less and less and the market price even less at harvest time. Then they started trading futures for 300% more product than ever existed, destroying the balance between supply and demand. That was the birth of the commodities market and it operates much the same way today except that they trade almost every raw material. Fast forward to the start of paying subsidies to farmers. Why did this have to happen? Well because of the commodities market, the price of corn stayed the same to the farmer through the 30's, 40's 50's 60's 70's and 80's. The government had two choices along the way. Stop the commodities market from selling more product than ever would exist or subsidize farmers. Which makes more sense and which did they do? Of course they provided a vehicle for people unconnected with the processing of commodities the opportunity to make a big profit from it. You think I'm wrong? Lets say someone that has nothing to do with growing or processing food... say a the president of the united states' wife, makes several hundred thousand dollars trading beef futures. Where did that money come from? There is only so many dollars of profit available from the time that beef is born until it is eaten. Who lost their profit? Hormel? doubtful. Cub foods? No way. The only person in the chain that had their profit cut into was the farmer, because the trading of non-existing supply determined what he was paid for his product and he was the only one that had to just take what they gave him. Much of his profit ended up in the pocket of someone who had no useful part in providing that product. So how do we fix this? I understand we can't just come in and say that's it the market is closed. BUT we can pass a law that a future can be traded one time and then not traded again until physical delivery is taken. Then people not connected with the supply chain in any way could not gamble with the profits of our raw material producers. The market should only be allowed to trade 90% of what will ever exist, not 300%. THE KING IS NAKED! | | |
| Is it just me or are we actually living in the story "The King's New Clothes". For those of you who are literature deprived the story in a nut shell is two con men convince the King they can make him new clothes out of an exquisite material, the most incredible ever, with one exception, it is invisible to stupid people. The con men spread the word far and wide about King using this new material. they make the "clothes" the King parades them around town and everyone exclaims how wonderful they are, not wanting to be seen as stupid, except for one simple honest boy who shouts at the top of his lungs "look! the King is Naked!!" Well here is where the story seems to part with real life because everyone admits the king is naked, in the real world that doesn't seem to happen. Not so you say? Well the following blogs will contain some of my "the king is naked" observations | | |
| Well I got my MCSE and MDBA went to Morocco to run sound for a Jazz festival and Hawaii for Christmas, allot has happened unfortunately not new clients, working on that. I learned (or maybe relearned) tonight that sometimes people who make the loudest noises about not judging and being open minded make underlying false assumptions/judgements and never have the courage to express them. Their actions eventually betray them. It just makes me sad. Some people get mad, indignant and self righteous, when being convicted of things they haven't even really been accused of and aren't true, I just get tired. I guess my brain isn't wired the same as most other people, once someone is my friend it's so hard to see them as anything else or forget them. No greater Love is there than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend, that's my favorite verse from the Bible. If all this makes me a fool, then I'm happily a fool. I can only hope that my friends are always my friends and pray to God that He brings the best things into their lives. | | |
| It's my second Sunday morning at Boot Camp for MCSE and MBDA and my last. Having my own little church with music by Josh Hoaby ( http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=84882353&MyToken=2ad492be-7379-4880-aed3-79130f95b13f ) a kid from church. Really great music, but don't tell him we have to keep him humble enough to get his head in and out of church. It has been a real challenge, 16 days 8 tests 4 certifications just one test left tomorrow morning, it really has been the hand of God that I have passed so far. It's been good though to return to some type of regiment to each day and hopefully I can continue that. For all of you that kept me in your Prayers, thank you. I have learned and relearned allot more than was in the books and study guides here. I listen to what so many of the people down here have said and observed what they have done and come to a few conclusions I s'pose I already knew but it was good to refresh them. One many people seem to be most content when they are unhappy and it's too easy to get sucked into that. Two I have had an incredible life so far that I often am not appreciative of and I take for granted I will continue to have an incredible life filled with incredible people. I am sure that is going to be the case but I have to keep remembering it is a blessing and a privilege not a right or something earned. Lastly you can complain because the van is late or walk back to the hotel and hear birds you haven't heard before see the leaves and acorns of fall, get some exercise and be amazed at how many people will look you in the eye and say hello. The choice is always there to complain or do and I think often it's the doing that brings happiness. Gotta go. | | |
